Wedding Bell Blues

I went to my friends’ (Doc and DJ), civil union this past October…I had mixed feelings. I was so happy that they were going to get some rights after being together for 25 years…but I wasn’t happy that they couldn’t legally marry.

So today, they start on a legal pursuit of their lifelong dream: To be just a regular person enjoying all the normal parts of being a human being – being married, for example, and not merely “unionized.” The real deal, the whole enchilada, the till-death-do-us-part kind of union. What we call marriage. What straight people can get with ease, even if they pull a “celebrity” marriage and divorce in a month or two.

A Connecticut Superior Court judge begins hearing arguments today about their lawsuit for the right to marry the person one loves.

I hope this judge really is “superior” and that Doc and DJ are elevated from second class citizenship to full citizenship and that very soon I’ll be dancing at their wedding…

Husband wants to be best man and I want to be matron of honor…or flower girl…I’ll accept that role too!

So all my best wishes to Doc and DJ on their long quest for equality. Much luck and much love and continue to fight the good fight!

Much luck to you both - know that you have a lot of support coming from a lot of different places and a lot of different backgrounds. I think if I truly enjoyed the political thing more, it would be a goal of mine to use my education to further such necessary ideals. As it is, I'm rather hesitant to even consider such a route, but you never know. No matter what, lots of love and lots of support!

Sadly, I think it does not matter what the courts decide, the people in office will always find a way to crush this from happening. Which is sad, because if the courts do not have the power to protect minority rights, then this risks impacting every type of minority rights issue moving forward.

49th, baby. I hate to flaunt it, but 49th. We have lots of room, come up and join us if you like the Canadian lifestyle.

Steve, my mother was born in Canada so I have strong feelings about your country...I think of it as mine too in a way...

I've even heard some relatives talk about retiring to Canada...if they do I'll have a built-in place to stay.

Who knows where life will take me, but if I wound up living in Canada I know I'd feel like it was home...

Sangroncito...I never thought about the situation you described...yet another reason why all people seserve civil rights...I can't fathom why this is such a big problem to so many people?

If we discriminate against one group, we pave the pathway to discriminate against another group...

Thanks to a randy fur trader generations back, I too have family from Canada and I can't tell you how proud that makes me. I always know that if this country gets to be completely opposite to everything I believe in, I can just drive North.

We will not be truly free until we are all equal.

HI LB...Let me know when you're packing for Canada...I might just meet up with you there.

Each day I get more disgusted and feel more disenfranchised from my own country...it sucks.

I had the fortune of being present when Babylon by the Bay starting marrying gay couples by the hundreds in 2004. It was the most love and commitment affirming event I've ever witnessed.

Good luck to Doc and DJ!
