The Pope Threatens Catholic Scientists with Excommunication

The pope, ever vigilant in unprotecting unborn unrights, has told Catholic scientists they may not use embryos in their stem cell research. If they do – they will be punished by excommunication.

I finally agree with the pope for once.

I don’t want stem cell research being done by anyone who can be affected by the pope or anything he has to say.

There are plenty of non-Catholics doing research in plenty of countries.

And I’d bet my white, communion, prayer book that if the pope came down with a disease that could be helped by prior stem cell research on embryos -- he’d be the first one in line to take advantage of the breakthroughs.

The pope may be able to keep his brethren in the middle ages by threats of excommunication, but he can’t keep science in the middle ages.

The U. K., China, Israel, Japan, Canada, Singapore, Finland, and Australia are making sure of that.

Am I to believe that Blogworld has been taken over by people who just don't care anymore?

What the hell is up with blogging. At one point, people visited blogs and argued and/or agreed or whatever they did -- it appeared they were people who cared about our country and our world.

I have had numerous visitors to my blog today, but they seem much more inerested in rubber girdles than they are in a lively debate about what's important.

Thank god for Nate and Sangroncito and all the people who leave a footprint in their lives.

Well I did get one nasty email so there are some people out there with more on their minds than rubber girdles!

Gimmee a break, it was friggin' Canada Day here!

a) I'd like you to publish your nasty e-mail. Address and all if possible. I mean, really. Have the sack to be public in your nastiness, internet denizens. We, the forces of Good, are not afraid.

2) I think you make a wonderfully salient point. If the key to some disease - and I'm thinking here of MS, but there are others - is unlocked through stem cell research, would the Pope (or other opponents of stem cell research) refuse on principle to avail themselves of the benefits?

Like you, I think not.

Hee! Just re-read that. "I'd like you to publish your nasty e-mail."

Hell, yes I would. All of it. Let me pore through it. (smirk)

For Nilbo: The email.

Dear Athiest, when you are dying you'll be the first one to say "oh god" and ask for help..you'll be begging for help and not from scientests (sic) but from god. I would be surprised if you are alive in five years. Gor (sic) is as bad as he is good.

Good night.

Who decided god was a guy?

Just wondering.

Sorry - was surprise birthday party for husband weekend and mom was up and we were shopping and doing all kinds of thins so I never actually got on line to read blogs. :)
I'm here now though - working from home so I can blog on the quiet day... :)

I think that using religion to controls ANYONE's actions is criminal. Religions help define a moral code and that is good, and hopefully people will follow their basic common sense morals, but a religious leader saying "I will punish you with your beliefs if you do this thing we don't believe in." It just seems wrongs. People should e able to make their own decisions and god, goddess, or whatever else is up there - will sort it out later. :) As far as I'm concerned, it's the intent and results, not the written doctrine that matters.

Not a bitch at all. (And you KNOW how busy we are with the moving, but I still am trying to keep up with a two times a week blogging schedule) I agree 100% with what you've said. In my mind science - based on facts and hypothesis is completely separate from religions - based on faith and mythos. The two cannot and should not be compatible. I'm not saying my doctors shouldn't have their religions. Religion is fine. But when it defines your purpose and your course of action, then you need to get out of science. Please. You'd probably be happier that way anyhow.
