I Smelled Rove, I Ate Eggplant

Interesting that Karl Rove was in touch with the Lieberman camp on Tuesday…I told you I smelled something bad in the air.

I guess I’ll be talking more politics here than usual, but we’ve got some unusual things going on in our state. Dumping an incumbent who did everything he could to win -- short of calling in the National Guard – that says a lot.

Now having him run as an independent – this is going to create a circus in my state

Last night I had the best eggplant parmesan I think I ever had. My neighbor used to own a restaurant and she cooks like no one else I know. She was kind enough to pack up a whole casserole for me. This was extra good, and I found out why – she doesn’t bread the eggplant, she dips it in flour and beaten egg and then fries it. It was so light, sweet and delicious I can’t wait to finish it up at lunch.

Tonight I’m going out to a rib joint that makes succulent sweet and spicy ribs to die for. I’ll also have sweet potato fries because they make the best.

Good eating days for me, as both dishes are two of my all time favorites that I just don’t have often enough for my taste.

So what’s cooking at your house?

Tonight we're having company for dinner. So I've already started baking my oh-so-delicious multigrain French bread (to be served with my killer garlic/parmesan butter), and later I'll prepare some chicken breasts with a white wine sauce, covered with a layer of mushrooms, a thin slice of Black Forest Ham, and a thin slice of Emmethal - almost like an open-face Cordon Blue.

To go with that, I'll stuff sweet red pepper halves with a mixture of brown rice, finely chopped veggies flavoured with fennel, thyme and sage, and (the secret ingredient) a lovely mild melted goat's milk cheese that holds the mixture together for stuffing.

Add a few stalks of asparagus drizzled with an easy-to-prepare hollandaise, a green salad with mandarin segments and a balsamic vinaigrette/oil dressing, and some half-decent wine, and I should emerge a hero by night's end.

Tomorrow night? Burgers. But tonight, we feast.

Nilbo..your dinner sounds unbelievably good. Yummy. The only part of your dinner that worries me is the brown rice. I can only eat it if it is thoroughly disguised...like with lots of bacon and onions and soy sauce...I just think it tastes like oatmeal which I hate. I'm wondering with the herbs and secret ingredient! if your rice would taste good to my palate.

Husband stuffs charred red pepper halves with fresh spinach cooked in garlic and oil...that's a nice side dish, have you ever tried it?

Okay, I'm coming back to the political part of the posting. I woke up this morning to the "threat" of another foiled plot in the UK, and I have to say I find the timing interesting re the Lieberman loss.

I'm sure we all recall how the terror threat color and level was constantly changing as the 2004 election drew near, not to mention the "foiled plot" announced by Ashcroft from Moscow, the duct tape and plastic drills, and so forth. So now we have a primary where the pro war pro President consevative democrat lost to an anti-war, pro Democratic values (health care, education, etc.) virtual unknown, and two days later a purported al qaeda plot is foiled and the terror threat level is raised. As Alice said when the potion in the bottle caused her to grow (much like Bush's nose) "curiouser and curiouser".

While I'm not saying this intelligence coup is not real, and that a good thing was accomplished by catching and stopping it and warning about future possible plots of this nature, I am not totally comfortable with the veracity of it. If they accused Clinton of Wag the Dog for a BJ... how much harder does this bunch wag the dog to cover up potential loss of power, impeachable offenses, and outright lies?

By changing the threat level and the airport restrictions causing delays with extra checks keeps the "threat" very much in the public eye, and the fear heightened - and the conervatives run best on fear.

Dinner here tonight looks like subs :).

EC - the very same thoughts went through my mind, especially when they said the supposed attack might have been slated for the anniversary of 9/11. It seems like the time was ripe to make a big splash about foiled terrorist attempts -- immediately after a nobody took down Hawkish Joe.

Bush said we had to invade Iraq because of weapons of mass destruction. There were none. Still that sound bite lives on and on and on and many people still believe there was a connection between Iraq and 911.

As you can see from Lieberman's "my opponents crashed my website" attack - you don't need any facts to make a statement that will be reported as real news all day long and for days after...

You can even create the website crash and blame others...(I don't know who did it, or if anyone did it..)

I do not believe anything on face value anymore.

But I could almost believe that Machiavelli is alive and well.

Ah Mary, of course Machiavelli is alive and well - in many incarnations in the current administration. Re Joe's website, I don't like his immediate jump to blame tactic, very Roveian... from what I read in other places he used a web hosting service that cost $15/month and housed 77 web sites on one server (don't know its capacity), leading me to believe that any site that received a lot of hits like a campaign site on the eve of an election, could bring that server down without skullduggery!!!! I also saw on Hardball among other shows that Ned Lamont's campaign immediately offered room on his site for the Lieberman campaign . . . good sportsmanship shown IMO.

As to Iraq and the WMD and Iraq-9/11 connection, that is the strength of the GOP and neocons, and a weakness of the current dems and progressives - they know how to speak in sound bites, and we speak in white papers. Sadly most of the population of this country reads about as much as the Shrub does (read: minimal) hence the only thing that will have any lasting impact with the population is a phrase that will fit on a bumper sticker (in large font) or in a 10 second sound bite. Any longer than that and it bounces off never to be recalled. One of the keys to the Clinton victory was the phrase "It's the economy, stupid." We need more truths like that, phrased similarly that can be hammered home the way they hammer 9/11, 9/11, 9/11.

Evilchime...so true.

The Republicans have completely absconded with words I once related to, like "family values" (equals right wing values) and not the majority's values...still now when I hear the word I think of them and my lip curls.

Dems now must be "progressives" because all of a sudden "liberal" is a dirty word.

I just moved... so not much cooking going on as we are un-packing, setting up, and still going to work!

So tonight, it is Mexican food from the very wonderful Tacos Al Asador! It is this amazing "mom and pop" type place that makes everything fresh from scratch there each day... so damn amazing!

I could eat there 6 days a week. On the 7th, I would be happy with meatloaf.

Oh... to dream.... hahahaha

JDJ - love good Mexican food...oh I hope the ribs will do it for me tonight -- I fear I'll be thinking about a delicious Mexican spread instead...

Happy new place!

I have to say I'm floored by Nilbos' dinner he is preparing. Wow!
I had a bologna and cheese sammich for lunch. This is not what I usually eat and I remember why now. Urp.

I love bologna and cheese...haven't had that in years, but it was my all time fave...especially with yellow mustard on a soft roll or bread.

Chips on the side...don't forget the chips on the side!
