I just love the beginning of the school year.

Even though I am not heading off to school anymore, I still remember the thrill of my new pencil box, shoes, first-day outfit and the overwhelming feeling that this year was going to be my best one ever.

More then New Year's Eve, I feel the start of the school year is a time when changes can and will happen; promises to oneself can be made and expectations can rise. So happy new school year to every one big or small starting off on a new adventure in what ever grade from kindergarten to post graduate work!

---

Last night we revisited The Twisted Vine restaurant in Derby and to my delight, the food was as delicious this time as the first time we went. They really have it going on in that place: wonderful value, superb food, friendly staff and great ambiance.

I met the owner, Joyce, who's adorable and also happens to love Maine Coon cats too! Last time I mentioned this restaurant I thought someone else owned it. I apologize Joyce for not giving you credit!!

----

My tomatoes are coming in over a pound a piece...they look like red pumpkins and I have more than I can eat - wish I could hand you one through the computer screen as they are so sweet and juicy and the best we've ever grown.

Husband made the garlic dills yesterday so in about 8 weeks we'll have some really sour, garlicky pickles to munch on...yum can't wait.

Carpe Diem!

And now, to add insult to injury, to you talking about GARLIC DILLS! Another one of my favorites!

Any chance you are coming to visit the Chicago area anytime soon?????
And bringing a cooler filled with goodies for Sammy and Zach and Nana?

:)

Love ya!

Bring some our way while you are at it...

I always loved going back to school for the same reasons...especially the big new trapper keeper folders :)

I love school supplies and the fresh new start of a new year too! I just discovered Operation Backpack, a project that collects new backpacks filled with grade-appropriate supplies to give to families in shelters. I did a Kindergarten and a 9th grade backpack. It was SO much fun shopping with a supply list at the store. I recommend this for anyone who wants to help and relive the back-to-school feeling!

Hey Linda, if you think the tomatoes are something...the pickles are just amazing. My only problem is I have the huge crock in my dining room now taking up floor space and the whole house reeks of garlic...but I do love garlic so, it doesn't bother me!

Bradley -- the Trapper Keepers!!! You are reminding me of something I forgot about. I also loved book covers...what a nerd, huh?

Hi Exis, don't you think we should all get school supplies even if we aren't going to school?

What a great thing you did for those children and I do believe it had to be lots of fun for you too.

We did our garlic dills last weekend .. 48 jars (from 50 pounds of thumb-sized dills). That's pretty much a year's supply for our family (Erin took about 20 jars - we'll go through about half a jar per week).

Our tomatoes aren't yet ready ... we have a couple of cherry tomatoe plants, a few beefsteak, and a few Roma (the best for my bruschetta). I can't wait. Fresh, garden grown tomato EXPLODES with taste. Two or three slices on some homemade bread, sprinkle on lots of pepper, add a layer of swiss cheese ... yummmmm

School days that involved a list of school supplies, lunch money and sharpened colored pencils were a blast. Learning was fun. Now that I pay hundreds of dollars a credit, replace fun with stress. I want to finger paint again! :)

we'll have to do a produce trade! :) I got tons of carmen and habanero peppers . . i keep drying them in the dehydrator so they dont' go bad before I can use them. :)

and as for supplies - every time i go through the stores it's "ooh notebooks, ooh pens" and then I go "but i don't need any of them. . . "

Gotta love this time of year eh?

I agree. The beginning of September always feels like the right time to start something new.

Happy September!

Hey Nilbo...we'll have to compare recipes! We usually end up with only a couple of jars as our friends have become used to getting their own jars and will sneak them out of our house if necessary.

Nicole, paying for school was my first reality check. One good thing is learning is forever and free after you stop going to school...

Ilanna, yummy peppers!! We put dried chili peppers in our pickle crock...gives them a little heat. Last year we grew hot cherry peppers and I just found a bag in the back of the freezer so chili is coming up as soon as the weather is cooler.

SANGRONCITO??? Forgive the caps but I am that suprised to see you! What a treat!! Hope all is well with you and how is your book coming? I've missed you!!

Hi PG - how's everything? I'm almost tomatoed out..not quite but getting there. Someday I have to learn how to can tomatoes.
