Palin for Veep?
Oh my oh my, Sarah Palin for vice president of the US? I sure hope McCain wasn't betting on getting any of Hillary's 18 million votes -- women ( except the extreme right) don't vote for women who want to hand over their reproductive rights to the government.
Plus women also think a smidgeon of experience might be a nice touch too. Actually, we also like the idea of a political candidate who isn't under investigation on questionable practices.
I think McCain has sunk his ship and as a Democrat I'm thrilled with his poor choice.
Whether it's poor judgment, lack of judgment or plain old senility, I can't fathom why he'd choose Sarah Palin when he had so many other better choices, female and male.

YES!!! I still can not believe that is his pick.
He can not stop talking about Obama's lack of experience, yet he picks someone who has been a governor for only 2 years! I mean, WOW!!
I don't know many republicans that will vote for a man who looks like he'll die any day now, making her president.
Just WOW
Alaska residents call her "Wolf Killer" because she advocates shooting wolves. She's also pro ANWAR drilling, anti-choice, and anti-gay. Classy.
Jeni, she was Miss Something of 1984 and does look very much like a myopic flight attendant so that has to count for something. Also she's the poster child for anti choice where her son's Down Syndrome is proof of "how wonderful she was not to have an abortion"....I say this tongue in cheek as many pro-choice women choose to raise children with challenges, it's not a republican or democratic choice, it's a "woman's choice"...something she isn't in to but at least in this case SHE made the decision and not the government.
She and her narrow-minded ilk are not going to get Hillary's votes.
Exis -- but she's fertile...!!!
I didn't know about the wolf killer name - wolves are such wonderful creatures and are little more than wild dogs -- I know she hunts moose though (how macha and how cruel)...whoopdedo and she's big on the death penalty which makes her anti-life when it's convenient.
I'm furious that the repubs and this woman are trying to hang their coat tails on to what Hillary did and lump us all into one big pile of ovaries as if we women are going to vote for genitalia rather than for the progressive issues we hold so dear to our hearts like pro choice, pro gay rights, anti war and an improved economy for everyone.
Hi MB!!
If you have time, go over to Bradley's blog today to see why he thinks McCain chose Palin.
I am not sure what it will do or not do for the voters, but I personally don't like her stance on important issues, or McCain's for that matter, so I hope it won't help him.
What an interesting mess this election is going to be!
xoxo
MB...my darling MB..
As painful as it may be..you have to think like a republican...and then read my blog on this today...I have laid out why I think this was actually smart of him to do..in 5 easy to read steps...
And I also can't stand her policy stances..
But I LOVE YOU!
Bradley

I think he chose her because she is a Governor and a woman. I don't share her social views, though she is not a fire-breathing homophobe, and she has taken on the GOP bigwigs in Alaksa, plus I think she gutted that bridge to nowhere.
I would think Christie Whitman a much better choice.
As for abortion, the political dynamics make little sense to me. The pro-choice stance is about individual decision (funny how some pro-choice folks favor gun control and other choice limiters) and a woman's property rights, plus the drop in crime during the 90s was largely due to Roe v Wade (though a pro-choice Amendment is a better defense than a Supreme Court decision). It also reduces welfare, though there should be planned parenthood clinics in every low income area and I'd advocate school lunch programs coming with foods heavily laced with birth control.
I do wonder what happened to the GOP. My grandfather became a Republican back in the 40s in the deep south, but he's more of a fiscally conservative anti-Huey Long brand. My father switched parties in the 70s and is pro-choice, but supports cutting capital gains taxes and has a concealed weapon, plus at 18 he was a big supporter of pro-choice Barry Goldwater.
I just hope Obama's talk of tax relief for people making less than 150K also applies to single people.
Hi Thomas!!! How nice to hear from you...are you still in Iraq? I hope you're safe and happy.
I agree about the GOP. Once it was taken over by the extreme right Christian crazies, it has become a party I can never vote for. I did once upon a time, but that was prior to the religious extremists owning it lock stock and barrel.
By the way, I am for the right to bear arms...I am obviously for a woman's right to choose for her own body.
This idea that the GOP has decided that women should bear babies even if they are conceived from rape and or incest and even if the bearing of this baby will cause them death is middle ages, not middle America.
McCain already looks like he's been embalmed -- don't know what kind of make up they're putting on him but he's very smooth and very white looking with those flashing dark eyes the only sign of life inside.
Wonderwoman who Palin reminds me of is just that...a cartoon and not real.
What must other countries think of us? Stay safe old friend!!!
Well, CT GOP has pro-choice candidates, just as Louisiana Democrats don't have a bunch of wild-eyed crazies like Pelosi or senile anti-semites like Carter, or for that matter kooks like Rosa DeLauro. She is just insane. I'll also take Mary Laundrieu over Chirs Dodd any day. In '96, Gary Franks was more pro-choice than his opponent Mailoney. So were Neilsen and Johnson.
I have four months left in Iraq, but I am glad for the surge. Anbar province was just turned over to the Iraqis, leaving 7 provinces left and it may be possible that Baghdad is the only place with a US presence by 2011, and it could be a six month deployment with 30,000 or so soldiers.
I am safe and have saved up lots of money. Now lets hope my savings won't get redistributed to some teenage mom belching out bastards.
Actually, groups like Christie Whitman's It's My Party Too could counter the effects of the far right, and remind Demcorats not to send in batshit progressives, like that crazy social worker in NH, in more districts. Another good example is Susan Collins of Maine.
We need someone who will slash government back to what it was in the 1920s.
Thomas, I'll be counting the days now that you'll soon be home and we could use some ass kicking right here in the USA.
I know oodles of people who would love to have a choice on who to vote for, but as long as the rightwing christian extremists have the GOP bowing and scraping -- they feel they have only one choice.
Religion, not all, not mine for sure, rules the party now and that's a shame.
That can change, but it will take time. I think I'll sit this election out. Obama's affable, but his background is a community organizer (talk about phony jobs; less credibility than social workers).
I did overhear someone saying Joe Biden isn't as exciting as Chris Dodd. Now, that is funny.
Let's see what happens with Obama and Pelosi in charge. At least I'm going into teaching. Let's see what America looks like in 2012.
You'll make a great teacher, but how about running for president? I guess, considering the new standards, you'd be overqualified for the job.
Be safe!
I am not that charismatic (I possibly have Aspergers), but I'd enjoy being a powerful force behind them. I also would not be beloved of either party. I could be a Goldwater Republican or a Bourbon Democrat, but neither seems to be in demand.
I do find some amusing things about the election.
John McCain will be the only presidential candidate to have been born in an area no longer a part of the US (Panama Canal zone). Obama is from the last state and Biden is from the first state. Additionally, we will elect the first President from outside the continental United States.
I am still hoping for a military coup with General Powell taking over :)
I always learn something from you which speaks of what a great teacher you will be. I think I'm a Bourbon Democrat too.
I think it's possible to be progressive on social issues and conservative on economic issues, though I must say, Bush almost ruined us economically...
I hate that the GOP has taken over the role of keeper of women's genitalia and I hope some day they'll give that one up.
Choice is something Sarah had and her daughter had, but something she wants to take away from me.
Well, I doubt Sarah sees it that way, though considering the abortion statistics and demographics (I'd say probably five potential Democrats have been aborted for every potential Republican) since Roe v Wade, it is political suicide to outlaw abortion. It makes a great fund raising issue and it reduces crime.
Also, abortion was a non-issue until recently. 500 years ago abortion and infanticide were not even controversial(except abortions were much more dangerous, but so was life).
The Democrats have more to gain from outlawing abortion. More welfare recipients forming their base and inner-city gangs to make up an Army for the radical left, plus when limits go into law, there is a political backlash that hurts Republicans.
Also, Bush is no fiscal conservative. His tax cuts were good, but were not balanced in spending reductions. Non-military spending has balooned under him and the Congress has failed to keep him in check. He's even been to compared to the paragon of corruption and evil Lyndon Johnson (the Vietnam War and War on Poverty were equally destructive wastes of money, though at least Vietnam can be blamed on the French).
One can outlaw abortion but women will never be forced to carry a fetus and will use many agonizing techniques to rid themselves of child if the feeling is that strong.
As you say, that's been going on since the beginning of time.
I realize a prohibition on abortion is a failure, yet my former girlfriend was accused of being an operation Rescue type because she wanted health standards for abortion clinics. Well that shows a different kind of fanatic, as you'd support health standards (safe, legal, and rare as Clinton said). I do admit that the thought of abortion as a form of birth control is disturbing plus the sheer number, but I oppose a legal prohibition. I do support plenty of education on it and easing adoption laws, so there are more choices.
Now, if I could find a way for Planned Parenthood and the Crisis Pregnancy Centers to work together.
I believe those who definitely want an abortion will have one (though the shot would be better health wise), but I imagine a lot of women are in the middle, especially younger women. I'd also say that the time to think about said choice is once you miss a period.
It is funny to think that I used to have views more in line with Palin, but I changed a lot since going to College and joining the Army, plus those old views were very tied to my old faith, and my grandmother would be to the right of Palin and Bush on that one topic (funny as Bush's grandfather Prescott was a member of the Birth Control League)
You won't have to go to Afghanistan, will you?
When I return from Iraq, I'll only have 90 days left in the Army. If I go weekend warrior, I may deploy to Afghanistan, which we'll be in for a long time. I was going to Kuwait, but the troop surge sent me to Iraq, which has been good for me (free trip to Mesopotamia), and the surge is working, which will allow us to phase ourselves out of Iraq, instead of calling it quits, and hopefully avoiding a bloodbath like the 2 million Vietnamese murdered by the Communist forces after the fall of Saigon.
Afghanistan is a tougher case and it cannot be occupied, but we can work to get them on their way and eventually turn it into more of a Kosovo (which I have also been to), though the place has been chaotic for millenia so it will take a while. It's up to me if I go there or not, now.
Whatever your choice, I wish you safety above all...
Well, thank you. I feel safer where I am in Baghdad than some of the neighborhoods I passed by on the bus in New Orleans. If I get a teaching fellowship in NYC, I'll be in some pretty dangerous spots, perhaps. At least here I'm armed :)
