Aha!

Now that huge blanket covering 17 year old Bristol Palin makes some sense.

I guess all that abstinence education fell a little short.

I think its about self-control and internal values. I went to Catholic school, but I knew about birth control. It was taught in Biology class, but of ocurse the official line was given afterwards. I was able to practcie abstinence throughout HS and College, up until I was 24.

If I was Mr. Palin, that lowlife boy would puff up and develop a soprano voice once I found out.

It is funny how Barry Goldwater while not personally in favor, supported his 19 year old daughter's decision to have a not-yet legal abortion.

Thomas, you are a man of patience if you could wait that long...;-)

I find it odd that an unwed pregnancy is now being touted as a reason to love or identify with Palin. It means nothing to me either way except that I vehemently support a woman's right to choose what they want to do with their own bodies...

Less than a week into Palin's VP campaign and I'm up to here in baby talk, leaking amniotic fluid, breast pumps etc. On to the issues I say!

You don't want to know how long I waited afterwards and between times :)

Well, I guess the religious right can identify with unwed pregnancies since Jesus was the bastard of a Roman soldier (and a sorceror, but that's another story). I also find the names rather silly, but if I had kids, god forbid, they'd be named after dead relatives.

Baby talk ranks up with hiring Michael Jackson as a babysitter. It is bad for a child's intellectual development.

Mammals are pretty good at procreating...I never found the process all that laudable -- just natural --(I'm not talking about the act that gets you pregnant, I'm talking about bearing young..) and I'm a mother of two.

All I know is I had to turn the TV off this morning as I could not bear one more comment from the media about Saint Sarah.

A man with her same credentials would never have been tapped for VP. Someone said it somewhere: When McCain was told he couldn't have his BFF Joe Lieberman, he sought out a vagina-american.

By and large, Sarah Palin was picked because she is a woman and a Governor, plus she is part of the far right. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas is much more respectable and pro-choice (though I think only in the first trimester), plus this may make me bigoted, but I prefer an Episcopalian to a non-denominational (most of my father's non-French family are old South Epsicopal, giving me an odd prejudice for an ex-Catholic converting to Judaism).

I am 31 and couldn't imagine having one kid....well if I meet a nice Jewish woman with an MBA, PhD, MD, or JD, that might change and may even retire my confirmed bachelor status :)

With six billion people in the world, we don't need as much procreation. Even if we castrated every male born out of wedlock, there'd be no shortage in the future

Thomas -- How about Irina? She's adorable and extremely intelligent!!

My buddy Doc would have converted from Catholic to Jewish if it weren't for the bris part of the deal. He is studying Hebrew at Yale and has been pursuing all things Jewish but can't make that last step.

I agree on the religion thing too - the main stream ones are nuts enough for me..no offense I hope hahahha

Well, I think Irina is seeing someone right now, but she definitely fits the criteria, plus she has a Russian accent :)

Luckily I was circumcised at birth (which is only proper to me), so the bris part is nowhere near as painful, plus I believe male circumcision is just good sense. Reform Judaism doesn't require it, but it's highly encouraged. If Abraham could circumcise himself at 99, then I can get a pinprick down there. It's less painful than a Barbara Streisand movie :)

I can understand your view since you are an atheist (I'd also recommend Ayn Rand), though I have such a love for the ancient and traditional, I don't have a dim view of old school faiths, though some of their views may be too hardcore. I still enjoy hearing chanting in Latin and I vastly prefer Hebrew to English prayers (the English versions sound like bad poetry), and I smile when I see a priest or monk in a robe, or a nun in habit...this is one of the reasons I love History so much, and probably one thing that led me to Judaism. Oddly enough there are groups of atheists that have a sort of church organization type meetings, which is understandable in our need for community, and a funny contrast to spiritual types who are all against organized religion

I disagree on circumcision...it's an alteration of your body for no real purpose - unless you do it for religious reasons which is something I find amazing that any god cares about penises that much.

I think I'm a Pantheist...I believe and have faith in nature.

I do not believe in the flat-earth sky god, that's for sure.

Sarah delivered her speech quite adequately but is sticking to her Bridge to Nowhere talking points that she is lying about...I don't get that part.

I'd say there are hygienic arguments in favor of circumcision and it would be a major nuisance to have to was that extra flap of skin every time I shower.

Also, by removing that flap, it may help promote self-control for guys. Plus by reducing a guy's enjoyment of sex it makes things more equal since women have to put up with all the crappy side effects.

I guess I always thought it's sole purpose was to be cut off, like the umbilical chord, but it was always something I favored, long before my decision to become Jewish. I imagine it may be something we may never agree on, but if my mother didn't have me circumcised as a baby, I'd condemn her for criminal negligence in addition to all my other issues with her.

As for religious aspects, its more done for ourselves than God, plus its a Covenant, and rules are rules.

I don't know too much about pantheism, but I am a believer in natural law, and I definitely have a fondness for objective truth over subjectiveness. As for what the Higher power is, I can't tell you. If I learned the truth, I'd probably go insane.

If I got what most politicians did, I'd probably go insane too. Now that I reflect on it, Linda Lingle of Hawaii was a much better choice. Mayor of Maui and first Republican Governor of Hawaii in 40 years. That would also be tapping into Obama's turf like him picking Napolitano for a running mate.

>Also, by removing that flap, it may help promote self-control for guys< - you are kidding, right? If not you still have way too much Catholic in you...(former Catholic myself, you know...)

As for hygiene...that's about soap and water and nothing else. Women have numerous folds and crevices and god knows I'd hate to have all that lovely stuff removed for cleanliness sake...

Ok, we'll agree to disagree...!

I guess this is something we would never agree on, though I would never in any way suggest doing that to a woman.

I probably do have a fair amount of ex-Catholic in some ways, but I know if I was kept schmucky, I'd have probably had myself circumcised before I decided on conversion, but then again I think a lot of men in our society need more cut than that, so I have a slight draconian streak that matches in with my cuddly nature, but I had a cute cuddly cat named Attila the Hun, and I regard Genghis Khan as one of the greatest men in history :)

When you come home I hope you find another Attila or Genghis - cute names for a pussycat.

Mary> I do find that cute now though as a twelve year old I was also such an admirer of ruthless conquerors. I would probably name the cat Temujin Genghis's birthname.

Ilana> I noticed you're in Newark. Depending on which plan pans out, I may be moving there after the Army. Either Newark or NYC.
