Some People Don't Carrot All

It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.

In a neighboring town, a man was eating a carrot when his wife said something he didn't like. Impulse-control impaired (might there have been some drinking going on?) he threw the carrot at his wife and put out her eye...so to speak.

Numerous hours of surgery could not save her eye and from now until she dies, she will be missing one of her eyes due to a hurling carrot.

He's out on a $500 bond.

From my perspective, that means a set of eyes is worth about a grand. That I have enough of these missiles in my garden to put out all they eyes on my street. That even a healthy vegetable, in the wrong hands, can become an instrument for maiming and disfiguring.

I will never look at a carrot again in the same way.

Update: Apparently there is a discrepancy as to whether the victim's eye was removed or just so damaged it lost all vision. One paper used the term "put her eye out" which to me means the eye is gonzo. I have written the reporter to find out which it is as I don't like to spread false information.

Also the AP described the event like this: a man TOSSED a carrot at his wife.

You can catch a carrot that is tossed so I find the use of this word odd and way too benign for the outcome of the event.

Another news agency said a woman was arguing with her husband...hmmm - talk about bias, as it's obvious both people were arguing not just the wife.

So true Jackie..but will they add raw vegetables to the list now that the damage a carrot can do is worldwide news?

Will people try to hold up banks pointing a carrot at the teller?

What about parsnips? Deadly vegetables can be purchased at the grocery store without a permit.

Jesus! Once when I was living in SF I went to stay over at my girlfriend's apartment and as we were entering her building, the neighbor went down the hall screaming with scissors in his forehead.

Maybe George Bush went in to Iraq to get the Carrots of Mass (Eye) Destruction.

Perhaps he was right all along...

Umm... big font!

I find it somewhat strange that violence against spouces (male to female and female to male) are really not treated as seriously as violence against others.

However, a $500 bond is just bail if he does not show up in court. You can dispute if that was a high enough bond, but often bonds do not reflect only the crime but the likelyhood / risk of the person coming to his/her court date.

I'd be more interested in knowing what will happen - my guess is the wife will not press charges. So... nothing.

I would love to know more of the story. It seems to be like such a fluke that the carrot happened to hit her just the right way to destroy the eye. i'm not saying it's not possible, but seems flukey. Truth is, she probably WON'T press charges because it was probably a typical fight in their marriage and they tend the throw things and it was an accident. If she files charges my guess is she's headed for divorce too cuz that would be the final straw in my book if it really was that bad.

But that's just playing devil's advocate. I don't say that throwing things at your spouse is acceptible but perspectives can be different depending on the full information and as wel all know - the media doesn't usuall give all of the information. :)

Like I said, "you are just full of information." You make me laugh most of the time. I'm an idiot so I can't comment on your political posts.
Your post on the "internuts" was very funny and I also liked the one about blogging. You got some good comments there.
I've been out of it for awhile. Too busy to post anything substantial or revealing ;)
Take care and watch out for those flying carrots. I can't tell you how many run ins I've had with those darn artichokes, deadly.

AMK -Scissors in the forehead is bad...tubers in the eye? Bad too.
And you can eat the carrot and have no weapon...can't eat scissors... ;-)

JDJ - yes, you remind me that bond is about flight risk and not the egregiousness of the crime. Carrot crimes must be few and far between I would guess. I agree on the spouse thing too...heck it's just a wife or husband..no biggie.

My big font? Well, since you asked:

I like big fonts and I cannot lie;
You other brothers can't deny
That when a post comes up with some itty bitty type
Then a big font in your face
You get sprung!

Ilanna...I will track the story and give an update if I can find out more...it does sound like a fluke...otherwise there'd be more injuries do to carrots and if you google it - only this one eye opening (forgive me) event is mentioned.

Dashababy - how are you doing? I know how busy you've been and if you only come here once a year...it's still a treat and an honor!

ah sirmixalot was a poet wasnt he?

anyway they might just give out baby carrots. i mean heck even peanuts are choking hazards and are deadly to someone with allergies.

anywho spousal violence is usually looked at a little different because everyone assumes its accidental.
when in reality most domestic violence is not accidental and is sometimes premeditated.

i dont think gouging out an eye with a carrot is premeditated though - :)

Jackie --I am always amazed that violence against a family member is thought of as less of a crime than to a stranger.

Smack your kid a few times and that's ok...smack someone elses kid and go to jail.
