It's Good to be an Atheist in December

I was remiss!

I didn't wish all my Jewish friends a Happy Hanukkah yesterday and I knew it started yesterday because one of my friends was sorry I couldn't be at his house for the first candle lighting!

Ah, it is good to be an atheist this time of the year!

I'm not kidding.

I get the enjoyment of Hanukkah and Christmas. I'm not sure what I like more, the twinkling lights on the xmas tree or the lighting of the Menorrah. Candy canes or dreidels; it's all good to me and I can enjoy the festive part of religious traditions without the worship part.

I adore sacred music too - from monks chanting to Handel's Messiah. Ave Maria is just as beautiful to the ears of an atheist as it is to the most devout Catholic.

Happy Weekend!

HI MB!

Thanks for the Chanukah wishes!

I will have the pleasure of having all my children plus Sammy over tomorrow night for latkes, candle lighting, and dreidel spinning!!

I am counting my blessings!

If you like sacred music, you would LOVE Bradley's CD.........very pretty tunes!! I have it playing in my store, and all my customers are commenting on how lovely it sounds! I'm a proud mama.

Glad to see you back blogging more frequently! You are on my regular visiting list!! I always enjoy what you have to say!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Love,
Linda

Linda...check out my fine photographic skills at capturing the gingerbread house making event we had today.

I am feeling the spirit of the season and it's all about the little things in life we all can have.

Like music and candles and gingerbread houses!

I love the varied traditions of this time of year too.

I was raised jewish, but I still remember the first xmas after my parent's separation. The first thing we did was go and buy a little 3' artificial tree for our house. (the day after xmas so it was on sale of course :)) My father had a fit and we loved it. We always treated it as a winter celebration tree.

Had a party this weekend, and we lit the candles, and decorated the tree with all KINDS of ornaments. :)It was a lot of fun. So i'm with you mary - I love being able to enjoy all of it. :)

My husband even bought me for chanuka a CD of the Klezmatics playing woodie guthrie chanuka songs... (it was a bit scary to be honest. :))

I'm going to have to hear that CD Ilanna!!!

Anyone have a good recipe for latkes? Do I really have to grate the potato to make a good one...I know, the answer is yes.

A lot of work but boy are they delicious....

(What does everyone fry them in?)

I was actually planning to try baking the latkes this year - still uses oil, but a LOT less. and all the recipes say they come out nice and crispy. I use olive oil cuz generally that's the oil i have on hand. :)

as for grating the potato- i'm lazy. :) I buy the REFRIGERATED hashbrown potatoes. Preshredded. makes life easier. The frozen don't work as well they retain too much of the wrong kind of moisture.

If i have to grate the potatoes, then I use a food processor with a grating attachment. :)

As a fellow athiest, I agree with your post about being able to enjoy the season without church! Happy X-mas!

Ilanna...I'll have to look for those potatoes because last time I made latkes I hand grated them...they were purple by the time I got through grating them....:-(
