Blogger’s Blahs

I just don’t have a single funny thing to say.
(Post Provincetown Depression)

I have serious things to say but I’m exhausted from caring so much, so I’m choosing to be quiet.
No, I guess I’ll bitch and moan a bit.

The fact that Bush gets another nominee for the Supreme Court sends shivers up and down my spine. Harriet Miers is a Bush loyalist and another person without a paper trail. One thing for sure, she is just George Bush in an ill-fitting dress.

The fact that Jet Blue out sources its maintenance to El Salvador because, according to a Wall Street Journal story last January, the Salvadoran mechanics make $300 to $1,000 a month -- far less than their U.S.-based counterparts, makes me fear that people are opting for cheap flights while risking their safety.

Pepto Bismal should alert people in big letters, that after taking their product your poop will turn black. Why don’t they do that?

Allergies, specifically sinus problems are increasing at a rapid rate as our air quality continues to worsen while no one cares. People are living “sick” and until the quality of the air becomes really important, we are all just a bunch of canaries waiting to go into the mine. Hope we survive.

Rich people should pay huge amounts of taxes. They should not get tax breaks.

Super-star sportsters shouldn’t be paid millions because they can ride a bike, or hit a ball with a bat, or stick a ball in a net.

Ditto to actors, singers, TV personalities.

Ditto to CEOs who demand huge salaries which is one of the reasons outsourcing is so popular.

An Update

The pickles are done and in jars now and the crock is out of the dining room. The pickles are authentic Jewish Sours, loden green, garlicky with a speck of hot, crisp and succulent. A great job done by husband including his superior presentation: they are in large Ball jars with sprigs of fresh Dill, pieces of hot red pepper and pure white cloves of garlic. Beautiful to look at and wonderful to eat.

The civil union I attended Saturday morning was very moving and beautiful. The Justice of the Peace did a magnificent job. The breakfast, catered by DJ, was delicious. I still wish it could have been a marriage because eventually that is where same-sex unions have to go – we can’t have each state creating their own terminology and laws and not recognizing other state laws or we will become the Divided States of America.

Breathe Right Snore Relief Throat Spray – this stuff really works. Husband used it last night and I didn’t wake up once to snoring. Husband made one tiny snore that sounded more like a ventriloquist throwing his voice as the sound appeared to emanate from the living room. But that was all. This product is worth its weight in gold!

I am seeking a fudge recipe that is not based on marshmallows or evaporated milk, but is an old fashioned butter sugar chocolate recipe. It is one of my life-long desires to be able to whip up a pan of fudge that tastes as good as the kind you can buy in specialty stores, like the fudge I had on the cape.

Also seeking a recipe for homemade Kahlua that tastes like Kahlua. As autumn makes her presence known, I must be turning to sweets and booze…rather than “put up” peaches or stewed tomatoes, I want Black Russians and chocolate fudge.

Not an interesting blog entry today, but the only way to get through writer’s block is to keep writing!

Speaking of writer’s block, is it extremely quiet in blog world lately or is it just my perception?

Pee Ess

Paintergirl just tagged me for this mini meme:

The Rules:
1. Go into your archive.
2. Find your 23rd post
.3. Find the fifth sentence (or closest to).
4. Post the text of the sentence in your blog along with these instructions.
5. Tag five other people to do the same.

My sentence: Whatever it is, I am not one of these people. Now this statement was made in reference to hypochondriacs who enjoy going to the doctors. Wish my sentence was a better one but it does fit my blah blog. Ha!

Okay I tag: John Doe Jr., Irina, Summer, Along, and Weetzie! (I figure if Weetzie would do that long banned book meme she's got to be up for doing this one sentence meme...)

It IS extremely quiet in blog world!! I'm really glad you spoke about allergies and air quality. Yesterday it felt so polluted in the air. I should know, I grew up in Los Angeles during the 70's when we'd have red alert days and not be able to go out on the playground and I remember being on the beach all day and coming home with burning lungs because of the smog.

I worry about my girl who was 5 months old when the WTC came down and we lived across the river. There was so much pollution and toxic waste in the air & her little lungs weren't even that strong. Of course the people in charge said the air was fine ~ bah!

Yeah, I can't tell you the rapid shifts my sidebar is making with bloglinks. So many people have stopped or are slower than they used to be. I'm thinking of making a separate MIA section for those not posting enough for my taste (well, let's face it, who COULD post enough to keep up with my voracious reading?)

I wish I had either recipe - I don't. Share when you get them!! I did some more research on Miers - came up with very little. Having not been a judge, we don't even have records of her opinions. *shudder* I fear.

Acumama, Summer and Echrai - thanks for letting me know that blog world is a bit slower than what I've been used to. I know I have less time to blog, and when I am up here, I feel so empty and unworthy - I seem to have either everything or nothing to say.

Acumama, Yes, they did say the air was fine, but then didn't they retract that statement? Do we need them to tell us the air's fine when you can see with one's own eyes the crap floating around. They'll say anything, won't they. Sorry you had to endure that...

Summer...thanks, I like how you describe the quiet of blogland as the Fall Crush of Things Which Detract From Time Otherwise Spent Blogging or fcotwdftosb which sounds like a word verification concoction...

Echrai...she was George W's private attorney and is a trusted friend so we can take a good guess as to how she thinks, plus her uterus is no longer functional - which scares me...

If I get the recipes I'll post on line for sure.

Hey...you've said alot considering you didn't have anything to say!! teehee. I thought I could direct you to a fudge recipe but alas...I can't remember where I saw it! If I find it, I'll come back and let you know. As to blog world being quiet, I know I haven't been posting much. Maybe it is because we have so much pollution, the prez is a squinky-eyed weasel, and the world seems to be coming to an end....? Heh...just a thought! ;)

Weetzie, I do think that many people are living through a mild depression while they watch their beloved country go to hell.

Mary, I'm just glad to hear from you no matter what. Sometimes I get the same funky blogged down feeling with everything and nothing to say. I've been praying for rain to clear the air here. I may have to sacrifice some small animal possibly. It threatens to rain but then it doesn't.
White Russians are my favorite drink but they make me way drunk. Yummy.
I'm also one of those weirdos that likes Pepto Bismal.
I bet your pickles are really pretty. Why don't you post a pic?
Just curious.

Sweet Dashababy, you made me laugh and laugh with your "sacrifice a small animal" comment..thanks - nothing like a big laugh to clear the cobwebs out of your head.

Re pictures: I made a decision early on, to remain anonymous so I could bitch about my relatives and say exactly what I wanted to say here on my blog, and also to not do the picture thing.

I love words and hope that I can paint pictures with words....

Ok, I get ya, anonymous it is. Sometimes I wish I would have chosen that route but then I would do nothing but bitch if I knew I could get away with it. Oh who am I kidding? I bitch enough in real life.
I'll just have to imagine your pickles :) and they are pretty.

Dashababy - When I first started an online journal I had my real name etc. on the blog and instantly I was found out! So I restarted my new blog in an anonymous manner and I've been happy with that result...no sis in law or mother in law coming after me with a butcher knife!

You tagged me. ME!! I'm so honored. I’ll get on it as soon as I get home.

Talking about air pollution, here in Malaysia it was pretty bad last month. We had a burst of forest fires from neighboring countries and the wind blew the haze here. It was awful. Everyone felt suicidal for weeks.

Anyhow, for someone who didn’t have much to talk about...you sure had a lot of things to talk about. Hehehe. And your blog is never blah, trust me on this.

Along - I'm honored you have accepted the tag!

Oh forest fire haze has to be the worst...hope this month is better for air quality. How's your sinuses?

here's one that uses whole milk rather than evaporated - i've seen this one in a few places... :)

2 c. sugar
2 tbsp. cocoa
3 tbsp. butter
1/8 tsp. salt
1 scant c. milk (whole)
2 tbsp. peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix sugar, cocoa and salt. Add milk and butter to mixture. Cook over medium high heat in heavy saucepan. Stir occasionally. Boil until mixture reaches a soft ball stage. (Drop from spoon in glass of cold water to see if the sample holds its ball shape.) Remove from heat and add peanut butter and vanilla. Beat until fudge thickens. Pour into buttered 8"x8"x1" dish. Cool and cut into squares.

and here's one that actually uses Heavy cream - yummmmm :)

2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup butter or margarine (not a spread)
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

Line a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan with aluminum foil; grease foil.

Stir sugar, cream, butter, chocolate and corn syrup in a heavy 3-quart saucepan over medium heat until butter and chocolate melt and sugar dissolves.

Increase heat and bring to a boil. Without stirring, boil vigorously 5 minutes or until candy thermometer registers 234 degrees F to 240 degrees F (soft-ball stage), or a small amount dropped into ice water forms a soft ball that flattens when removed from water.

Remove from heat and, without stirring, add vanilla extract. Cool until 110 degrees F or pan is lukewarm and skin forms on mixture.

Stir fudge with a wooden spoon 5 to 10 minutes until it thickens and holds its shape 5 seconds after you stop stirring.

Stir in nuts. Spread evenly in lined pan.

Chill 6 hours or until firm.

Invert pan, peel off foil, invert fudge and cut in 1-inch squares.
