Women are not Xerox Machines
We must keep control over our Reproductive Rights.
Ladies, hold on to your uteruses (uteri?) as we are getting very close to losing the right to decide what we want to do with this specific organ.
(I know, it is located inside our own body, but for some reason, that just doesn’t count.)
Roe vs. Wade could be overturned if Bush pushes through two extreme, conservative, anti-choice justices (men) to fill the Supreme Court vacancies.
John Roberts who’s up for the top job appears to be as innocent as an ingénue, but don’t be misguided by his soft voice and liquidy eyes. He’s a staunch conservative and has been for decades. At age 50, he can hold his top spot as Chief Justice for many years, maybe as many years as he is old.
His reputation for being intelligent is widely known; his past judicial history is meager. He’s been groomed for the Supreme Court since the Reagan days and has been following directions on how to make it to the top court by having so little written opinion to peruse or dissect that there is little to debate or discuss.
Roberts would not be where he is today if he openly opposed any single view held by the current president. Just look to the prez because there’s one thing we know about this administration: no one will be placed in any position of power who challenges the prez’s beliefs or mythology.
In the early 60s birth control was against the law, even for married women. A woman’s “punishment” for having sex was the possibility of pregnancy. Illegal abortions were always readily available to the rich, but the poor had to deal with back room operations performed by people who weren’t competent enough to slice a pot roast, never mind scrape a uterus.
I would hate to see American women returned to back rooms where unsanitary conditions and incompetent “doctors” are their only choice in order to maintain control over their own bodies and own lives.
Women will never be equals if there are special laws that control their internal organs. It is our bodies and our right to choose and no government entity should ever threaten, cajole or alter our decision whether they like our decision or not.
When faced with pregnancy or preventing pregnancy, no one person, male or female, no group of people have-- the right to play god and decide a universal policy for all women.
I sincerely hope that whoever is placed on the Supreme Court will leave Roe vs. Wade as is and not pander to extremists who want to make their opinions the law of the land.
Now me and my uterus are going downstairs for a cup of coffee.

As I said before, the damage Bush is doing today will not compare the the implications it will have when he is long gone.
I'm just glad I am north of the 49th!
That John Roberts has shifty eyes... I don't trust him or what he's saying, Mr. Lawyer man. Thank you for this post MB, your right on ALL counts.
Again, that this is even something to discuss let alone take away, is appalling. Trust me if it was ANYTHING to do with a man's balls, it wouldn't be an issue.
People can have their opinions about when life starts, and what abortion means FOR THEM but no one else. Fucking judgemental assholes we have in this country of ours. Women will start to die again, from back alley abortions and it will get ugly.
We talk about moving to Canada, mostly when we retire as a possibility. But when things like this appear on our horizon, I want to leave sooner, especially knowing I have a young daughter that will be effected by this more than me because I'm done having babies!
So true, JDJ...we tend to focus on the now, but the seeds planted today will grow like Kudzu...
My mother was born in Canada and I'm very proud of her mother country.
Acumamkiki - of course we agree as always...
People forget about how it was pre reproductive rights, but we have an almost family member (close family friend) who's sister had an illegal abortion in the early 60s. She was the perfect daughter and couldn't share her "shame" with her strict parents.
She ended up bleeding to death in her bedroom, dead at 18 years old.
MB-
I concur with your feelings on abortion and the roberts nomination effect on this...but this is only one of about 25 issues where our country could be set back ridiculously in a short amount of time.
Women's rights, Civil rights, Voting rights, The vast and misunderstood true right to privacy as prescribed inherently in the constitution. All of these will be tested in the upcoming years...
ugh!

MB, it's a shame you're too chicken to tackle the big issues ;)
This is fascinating to me: "He’s been groomed for the Supreme Court since the Reagan days and has been following directions on how to make it to the top court by having so little written opinion to peruse or dissect that there is little to debate or discuss."
I don't doubt that that's the case; it just sounds so like something out of a novel, or movie. In fact, movies dealing with the antichrist have depicted such a person. No, I'm not saying Roberts is the antichrist, not at all. Just that there are people who leave so little of a "trail" through life, or at least the trail is of such little depth, that we really have no clue what they are truly about. You know? Very interesting.
I'm just sad. Thats the only way to describe it. I consider myself a conservative, yet there are things in which I lean to the left. I guess I'm actually more moderate. That said, I voted for Bush in the last election.
(hanging my head in shame). His extreme right views and how he has handled New Orleans has me perplexed.
I'm against abortion, but I've had one. Would I have had it if it were illegal...I dont know. I used to say 'no way', but honestly, I just dont know. I was glad I had the choice. I was terrified when I made it, but glad it was MY decision nonetheless.
Honestly, I know I dont want extremem rights on the Supreme Court. Anyone Bush chooses, thats what they'll be.
I'm not ready to change from Republican to Democrat, but Bush is sure pushing me in that direction.
mb, you are always so eloquent, what a great post! I agree with you as always...now me and MY uterus are going to get a cuppa joe.
The good news is, most justices who are put into the position because they have a certain view, often end up flipping their stance. That's the beauty of a life-time position. Starting back in the days of Jefferson, judges who came in because they were liberal turned conservative and conservative judges turned liberal. What DOES scare me about him, more than which viewpoint he leans towards, is if there's so little written by and about him, how can he have the requisite experience to do the job. We need justices who have been through the battlezone of difficult court cases and well-honed opinions.
Ok-I don't trust his HAIR! Any man who wears his hair, ala 50's style Leave it to Beaver, hold on to your uterus ladies. Thems fellas are out to control you and your insides too!
I'm really surprised that big government doesn't take back our right to vote as well.
Going back to the uterus, could our country really head in the direction of "A Handmaids Tale"? Absolutely. Will our counrty lose all power on the wide scope of things if they overturn Roe vs. Wade. you betcha. Will there be deaths because of this? It will surpass the amount of soldiers that have died in the war.
Bradley, as you and JDJ point out, we are on the brink of losing so many freedoms and it's terrifying.
Most people don't understand and will have to wait until something big hits them in the face. If you live in an ivory tower with no knowledge of history it's a good time to be you in the USA -- all others are in for troubles I fear.
Susie, here's a great article which speaks of Roberts grooming: http://www.villagevoice.com/news/

Written by legal expert Jonathan Turley from George Washington University...
And check out this chilling statement:
"
If Roberts is true to his past, Roe might not be around when he turns 64. During the Reagan administration, Roberts argued for the appointment of pro-life judges and supported a memorial service for aborted fetuses as "an entirely appropriate means of calling
attention to the abortion tragedy." He has referred to Roe as "wrongly decided" and based on "the so-called right to privacy."
Lawbrat - I'm so glad you had a choice...our mothers and grandmothers did not... Yes, middle of the road would be nice -- rather than extremely left or right...
Weetzie, maybe one day you and your uterus and me and my uterus could have coffee together!
Echrai...well we had an horse trainer for the head of FEMA (isn't that what I heard about Brown?) so why not a closet judge..kept pristine and away from public view...but not away from the extreme conservatives like the dominionists who just love him.
Paintergirl, Remember the black man had the right to vote before the white woman!
If women band together and demand our rights we are a force to be reckoned with - unfortunately we are hard wired to be non-confrontational, compromising and plain truth, are usually too busy raising children, working etc. to take on more work of any sort. But that will have to change if we are to keep and expand our rights as human beings.
Of course I'm with you on this one MB. I truly agree with acumama as well when she said if it had to do with gonads and testicles it would be the right to privacy all over the damned place. In fact, just think, for a moment...if men were the ones that had babies and menstruated? Don't you think it would be heralded as proof of their power as men? But women are not this proud...men would be holding up their tampons saying: "Look at me Bubba, I'm using Playtex Extra Large b/c of my super macho manly heavy flow!"
digressing is a problem for me...
My point: If it had to do with man parts there'd be no argument whatsoever.
Uber-conservatism? Of course they think ahead and try to further their agenda. It's really ALL they have to think about. I know if they weren't grooming Roberts they certainly picked him for his lack of public statements. Less to get into trouble for, no?
Well the problem with Roberts is they ask him questions, but he evades answers. He tells half truths. No agenda?? You have got to be kidding me. Oh there is an agenda alright, and it really scares me.
And poor women, that whole menstration thing-we are made to feel ugly when we have it. It's something nobody wants to know about. I agree with you ladies 100%.
LB ...you got me laughing. I needed a good laugh thank you!
Paintergirl, he certainly does evade...and the sad part is I'm glad-- - I'm afraid to hear the truth even though scads of reading predicts and his past statements predict and our prez to whom everyone must kowtow wouldn't allow him to be considered unless-- he was a staunch right winger.
So we'll have a supreme court made up of all men mostly all insanely right wing...nice...bird can't fly with one wing...confuscious says...
"The prez's beliefs or mythology"--that's a damn good one!
Hey Sexy Mama...glad you enjoyed that phrase!
Did you see him on TV last night?
