Log-ons, Passwords and Pin Numbers

It's like pick-up-sticks or a house made of cards. It's the straw and the camel's back...it's the feather that knocks you over.

I have reached my personal ability to handle log-on names and passwords and when I switched to Cable Phone, I needed to create two more log-on names and passwords and now I'm totally on overload.

There's no way I can remember and deal with all these sign-on identites and passwords -- so trying to put a small order in to Drugstore.com and buy a book from Half.com and adjust my preferences for my Optonline Voice I managed to confuse all log-on names I've ever picked, all passwords I've ever used and can't seem to do anything now.

I know there's Password Manager...a system to keep all your log on names and passwords neatly packaged and available, but I don't want this unseen Manager to know all that information. He/she/it could ruin me financially and wreak havoc on my life.

I have thought of writing a group email to Drugstore.com, Half.com and Optonline.com asking the three of them to put their pretty little heads together to figure out what it is I'm supposed to put in the blanks to access my accounts...maybe they should be forced to figure it out for me.

I currently have passwords, log-on names and/or pin numbers for the following:

ebay.com
half.com
drugstore.com
Amex
Chase
Peoples Bank
Yahoo.com
Flickr.com
Blogger.com
Cooking.com
Kohls.com
Optonline.com
Outlook.com
Aol.com
Sitemeter.com
Blogpatrol.com
Toys r us.com
Stewarttoys.com
King Arthur Baking Circle
The Spice House.com ( a place to buy excellent herbs and spices and not the naked woman site with a very similar url, causing me to always put the wrong url in first bringing up the boobs instead of the basil. )
Shutterfly.com
Kodakphotoshare.com
Amazon.com
Paypal.com
Staples.com
Verizon.com
Healthnet.com
Att.com
Crutchfield.com
Gmail.com
NewYorkTimes.com
HartfordCourant.com
NewHavenregister.com
Lulu.com

I have more I'm just tired of writing them down.

I can't remember who I am at this point. And if I can remember who I am, I certainly don't know what my password is.

Yours truly, (I think)

Username or password invalid. If you've forgotten your username or password click here for an email reminder to be sent to your email address (which we know you can't get into because you've forgotten that username and password.) Ha ha ha ha.

Echrai..you are one funny woman..wish I would have thought of that and put it on my post!

In my next life I'm going to make all my passwords the same: ARRGGGHHHH

That's how they make me feel, and maybe I'll remember that one!

I know exactly what you mean. I don't have different passwords for every single thing I use, but I am forced to have several. However, my general rule is to stick to as few as possible to avoid confusion.

Irina, I tried to keep them the same, but each new site has different parameters on how they want your password to appear...sometimes the name is even chosen and I have to think up another name!

Sangroncito...I've tried to keep them uniform but as I told Irina...sometimes they just won't let me...and the alterations on the themes seem harder to keep straight.

Some of the places, like stores, why do I have to sign in to buy something and add yet another password and username???

Firefox is help as "it" remembers passwords and names...but I don't know how it knows... I wish I could start all over...oy yoy yoy.

Woah - that's a lot of passwords, no wonder you can't remember!

I work in the Internet security industry and have been using a password safe for years. I've never heard of them getting broken into.

I have a two-tiered system. For high security (ie financial/credit card/purchasing) sites, I have a complicated username/password - same for all. If one gets hacked, I'm sunk, but I reason I was sunk anyway, and hey, good luck getting much money from me, dudes.

For less secure sites (like I care who logs on in my name to my high school newsletter, but they make me have a password because ... well, because they CAN, I guess) I use a simple username/password.

Firefox remembers them, but I don't count on Firefox. I just keep things as simple as I can. If I'm asked for a password and can't remember which one I used, I just ask myself "Would having this site hacked result in financial ruin/divorce/public humiliation?" If the answer is "No", I know which password I use.

Very clever MMM! I try to keep the user names and passwords the same or within the range of 2 or 3 otherwise I forget. What's my name again?

I'm so glad to know that someone else out there makes the boobies/basil mistake.

Yay!

(Sort of.)

Hanni...password safe...is that the same as Microsoft wallet?...I think that's the name that keeps popping up and swearing it will handle all my pasword problems.

Nilbo...that's a great idea! I wish I'd thought of it...do I really want to change names and passwords now for my banking etc.? No..not today anyhow...but I must remember that trick.

AMK - your name is AMK! We are all plagued by these numerous usernames and passwords.

Summer! I have responded on your blog but it's not showing up...crazy huh? Let's see Spice House is herbs and The Spice House is boobs..or is it the other way around...I just can't remember!

I use password safe as a generic term, but it might be the name of an actual product... who knows?

I use something called "Access Manager". I think its from the UK or something.

Thanks for the name Hanni...I've got to do something differently...re: passwords and usernames.

Funny Doc...it reminds me of someone near and dear to me to has to call me on the phone and say: What's my password for....?
