I Want to Eat… What for Dinner?

It’s afternoon and I should be thinking about what I’m making for dinner tonight. But I can’t think of a single thing I feel like eating. Does this ever happen to you?

Italian? Nah

Asian? Nah

Mexican? Nah

Comfort food? Nah

Fusion? Nah

Nothing, nothing appeals to me at all.

Something fried? Boiled? Broiled? Braised? Sautéed? Steamed? Roasted?

Oh I know what I feel like…a big bowl of Portuguese "Pork and Clams."

I have neither ingredient, so I’m back to the drawing board.

What are you having for dinner tonight?

And, do you call the evening meal dinner or supper?

When I was a kid my mother called lunch dinner and what I call dinner supper.

(And to the person who came to Tchotchkes wondering why their poop turned black after taking Pepto Bismal, I don't know the answer, I just know that it happens.)

{ Food talk and poop talk in the same post, ick}

Yum, carne de porco alentejano (a.k.a. pork and clams). I've just had dinner, but if I had pork and clams in the kitchen, and if I had a recipe, I'd make dinner again anyway.

Do let us know what you finally had. :-)

I feel like having something easy.

Spaghetti?
Chicken/taters/salad?

Eh.

Feh.

(P.S. my new blog is up)

Growing up, I asked my mother why we called it dinner not supper, and she explained that the biggest meal of the day is dinner. So if you worked on a farm and had your big hot meal in the middle of the day, that was dinner. The meal after was supper. If you had a sandwich for your mid-meal, that was lunch and your big hot meal was dinner. She never would explain what you called it when you never ate a hot meal and only had one afternoon-evening meal around 4pm. I still think that's Lunner. Although B thinks it could possibly be Dunch. We both agree, though, it's not Dipper.

And for tonight? Same thing I do every night. Pick up something on my way to class. Bleh. Probably going to do the at school hot dog or soft pretzel with a cup of carrot and celery sticks thing. It's either that or fast food. I'm getting awfully sick of fast food by the end of the year. Never thought that'd happen to me.

This happens to me all the time. I'm hungry but nothing sounds good. Usually I will make grilled cheese and homemade tomato basil soup when I don't know what I want.

kimananda...so you know of this dish? It sounds odd to some people but it's so good, especially with crusty bread to soak up the juices..yum.

Summer my dear! Welcome back to the world of blogging and to a spot where no one can steal your art or words...you've been missed!

Echrai...yes, that's what my mother told me too..now I remember...does anyone have a big main meal at lunch time anymore? I love junk food and fast food and wonder if I could ever tire of it...

Dashababy..homemade tomato basil soup? Now that sounds good...real good.

Dinner will be: ((((drum roll))))

Beef Stew husband made on Saturday. By now it's even better than when it was first made and best part - it is already cooked. So I can heat it up, throw a salad together and voila, something husband will adore...as he made it!

Now back to blogging without shame, fear or concern about dinner...

jg - I adore eggplant...alas I am the only one in my family who does so I don't have it often enough for my taste...it's a vegetable that eats like a meat so to speak...yum wanna share your recipe?

Eggplant?...yeah..emm...ehem...no..yuck!!

I'm always like that...hungry but not in the mood to eat. I'll be like whining to hubby.."I'm hungggrryyyyy" and he'll be like "Go eat what's in the kitchen". Then I'll spend 20 minutes opening and closing the fridge and all the cabinets, only to come back to my hubby and continue whining "There's nothing to eeeeeaaatttt." It's a sickness I tell you.

Campbell Tomato soup sometimes does it for me. Have some garlic bread at hand and I'll be full and happy.

Hope you found what you were craving for.

Along, I'm glad other people go through the same thing as I do - wanting something but not knowing what I want.

I love garlic bread...could go for some right now!

I wish I hadn't just brushed and flossed or I'd have something sweet...I'm in the mood now for chocolate!

I re-heated some stuffed red peppers I'd made for Saturday's meal, and made the world's easiest recipe for baked Pork Tenderloin (sear, slather in Dijon mustard, roll in crushed hazelnuts, roast for 45 minutes at 350) (told you it was easy). So tonight was low stress.

Tomorrow, I'll bake up some bread and make some of my killer garlic butter, and maybe throw on some spaghetti and some Caesar salad.

I seldom run dry - and if I do it means it's time for a trip to the grocery store, which never fails to inspire me.

Yep, I lived in Lisbon for six years, and have thus had loads of yummy Portuguese food. I've never made carne de porco alentejano myself, but I used to do a mean bacalhau com natas.

Kimananda, I had to look it up, but what an interesting recipe...Husband makes codfish cakes every xmas eve and this recipe is much like his, except this one is cooked in a bowl with whipped cream on top? Is this correct?

Last night (when you posted) we had vegetable soup with orange roughy.

Tonight we're having spicy black beans with savory rice. The hubs will have some hormone-free chicken sausage with his.

I think you should eat vegan tonight - maybe some delicious burritos made with black beans, sauteed bananas and zuchinni, lettuce, tomotatoes, onions and avacado?

Hänni --husband would die if I served him that...he's a meat and potatoes man..

Except for the banannas, it sounds like something I'd enjoy very much.

The reason husband cooks is so he can have the food he likes..I figure it's a trade-off -- I don't have to cook (that's good) and he gets what he wants (that's good) but I don't get to eat to adventurously...(that's bad.)

Sounds to me like you need to go to one of those all-you-can-eat buffets where they have everything you could ever want on the table.

That should solve the problem.

Of course, I am a few days late with the suggestion...

♥,

Steve

PS: Blogger is being a pain and will only let me post as anonymous! What is the deal with that?

There are some different ways of doing the bacalhau...my way has almost no cream at all in fact, but some milk, and then a dash of cream at the end so that it can really be called 'with cream' (com natas). The only Portuguese guy I know here in Copenhagen does it with bechamel sauce, which I cannot imagine, and we have talked about having a bacalhau com natas cook-off.

And, just to let you know, the last time Thor called me from the train station...he does that if he has to wait, and usually asks me to entertain him, or to tell him a joke..., I read him selections from your beautiful ode to Dicks. He found it very entertaining!

Nilbo, besides being one of the funniest people I know...you have some marvelous recipes to share also. Nothing better than an easy but impressive recipe. I'm going to try that pork tenderloin recipe very soon!

Steve, Blogger is having a bad day or two or three...good thing it's free or I'd be pissed.♥♥ Love those hearts!

Lawbrat, like you, if it's just me eating, I'll have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich rather than cook something just for me...

kimananda, how honored I am that I could entertain Thor with my Dick blog!

You will have to let me know how the cook off goes. I once had a blueberry muffin cook-off at my house. Friends came with muffin pans while I served bloody marys and mimosas. It really was fun and we had plenty of muffins to eat...and lots to drink too!

Hehehe I'll gracefully accept the compliment about being funny - much as it's against my nature to accept compliments gracefully or in any other way. But the recipe for the roast pork tenderloin? Is delicious. And seriously, that is the ENTIRE recipe, no need to add anything, or to freelance or tweak or play around. I sometimes shave some of the very thin layer of fat off the pork tenderloin, but if I didn't it would still be delicious. And at 45 minutes, I carve into the heart of it, looking for that perfect pink interior (because we KNOW that it's a myth that pork needs to be overcooked, right?). Serve with some light veggies (if you want my stufed pepper recipe, just say so) and stand back as people praise your culinary skillz to the sky. Bon appetit!

I want your stuffed peppers recipe Nilbo!!!!!!!!!! And any other recipe you think is good. In return I will offer up one of my all time favorite pasta sauces:

In large roasting pan place peppers, red, green yellow orange no matter but I like at least two colors. Slice up a container of mushrooms add to roasting pan. One or two onions, I like red. Half dozen cloves of garlic which I leave whole. Sauteed sausage, sweet,in mouth-bites and hot cherry peppers, remove stem and seeds ( we put in about 5)and roast in olive oil "s and p" till carmelized in a 300 degree oven.

Place a few large cans of crushed tomatoes in large pot. Add in carmelized sausage, peppers and mushroom mixture...herb it up to your taste and let it simmer.

Simply marvelous!
