I’m a confessed Luddite.
I just can’t keep up with the changes in technology. I am overwhelmed by my new coffee maker that has so many options, buttons, buzzers and levers, I have trouble making a simple unprogrammed pot of coffee.
The single disk CD player I once owned and could operate was upgraded to the 6 CD player that I could mostly work, to the 400 CD player that I can’t get to play what I want when I want it. Is this progress?
I’m into on and off buttons and that’s about it.
I gave up on photography when the world went digital and I actually got to see what photos I was taking (so very, very bad) rather than back in the film days when with great hope in my heart, I’d send off my film, imagining gorgeous photos returning to me suitable for framing.
Oh the excitement of getting that thick envelope in the mail, my fingers trembling with anticipation as I sifted through the glossy images of ceilings, headless relatives and red-eyed toddlers missing body parts.
I’ve even had some problems with dimmer switches, insisting to husband that the dining room light had blown when it was actually the dimmer dial had been moved to off – leaving darkness as the only option for either push on or push off.
My computer is so sophisticated at this point, the only thing I can do to dumb it down is continue with my dial-up service. I have no wires from my mouse or keyboard to the computer which upsets me on a daily basis. I like wires. They confirm that said mouse and keyboard have a chance of working – after all they’re plugged in.
Now I wonder how the mysteries of the universe have decided that both mouse and keyboard can work without wires and I am absolutely obsessed with the status of batteries I have available to me – currently I have about 6 packs of AA batteries waiting for the moment when both mouse and keyboard crap out for the fun of it.
The remote control situation in my house is absurd. Just by picking one up I hit a button that affects all the other remotes and I usually end up with no way to remotely do a damn thing. (I have learned there’s a mysterious “aux” button that is situated on the main remote exactly where my thumb goes when I pick the damn thing up causing the remote to shut down in disgust and refuse to work no matter what other buttons I push.)
And don’t get me started on picture within a picture – an asinine feature because no one can watch two TV screens at one time unless they have four eyes. Yet this button is located right next to Alternate Channel and I end up with a little mini TV blocking the main screen and again, I just keep pushing buttons hoping against hope it will go away, and all it does is jump from one corner to the other…sneering at me.
So many buttons, beeps, buzzers, manuals, instructions and warnings, I am emotionally drained from dealing with modern technology. I know my car can do lots of interesting things, but I have never read the 10 pound tome that came with it, so my digital clock is the wrong time, the balance is off on my speakers and only I control cruising, not the button that boasts how it can do that for me. I’m lucky I figured out how to put on the heat. (I remember the car salesman was non-plussed when I chose the manual top for my convertible rather than the automatic – he thought I was nuts.)
Nope I’m not nuts, just a lazy Luddite, wanting to keep some of my brain cells and energy for things other than technology.
(Speaking of technology, I do have a BlogPatrol counter that I actually installed on my blog template (took a day) that told me I had 67 visitors yesterday to my blog. This is an amazing amount of people and my usual count is about 15-25 visitors. Please don’t tell me that "crap eating" is that interesting to readers. Anyone have any idea why I was such hot stuff yesterday?)

You had many visitors because of course your blog is awesome....and the story about the doggies and the cat litter was a hoot. I read it outloud to my son who totally enjoyed it. He had some funny thoughts about the Vet's tampering with the cat turd ideas as well. Heh. So maybe it was the crap story after all......
btw, I can't manage any technology either, the fact the I am EVEN HERE IN BLOGWORLD is a total mystery to me.
Yep, It's the crap eating MB. Every time I venture into something remotely educational (think PBS) I can hear the yawns across the blogboard. It's the wacky far out funky stuff people love to read about...that and your wonderful way with words makes an irresistable combination.
More Crap! More Crap!
I'm crapulous!
(actual def) 1 : marked by intemperance especially in eating or drinking
2 : sick from excessive indulgence in liquor
Thanks weetzie and LB for enjoying my crap eating posts.
Crap eating is indeed hot stuff. Ha-ha!
crapulous is a very spectacular word. I will want to say it all the time now....crapulous, crapulous, crapulous, crapulous, crapulous, and crapulous!
It is a great word isn't it Weetzie?
Notice only you in your first comment even mentioned the theme of my post (my struggle with technology)the rest has been a load of crap...dying laughing here - I must check over at laurenbove to see how her shitty post is doing ha ha ha...
I want to comment on the whole picture in a box. I HATE THAT! I always screw up and accidently hit it, then I helplessly cry out to my husband-help me. I hate to be left in the technology darkroom!
I am afraid you cannot be a blogger AND a Luddite. You can be a blogger and dork. You can be a blogger and a technogeek.
If you wish to be a Luddite you must give up blogging and become a graffiti artist.
Also, as you can tell by any network's primetime line up, crap eating sells.
Sparky - I'm a post-blogging neo Luddite...but I do think being a graffiti artist would be great...I'd go straight to Milan where I saw the most graffiti I've ever seen in my life. (also the most dog poop on a sidewalk which also fits into the poop/techno theme I've got going here...)
Crap eating does sell..I have the hits to prove it...
Paintergirl..repeat after me: we will never ever ever buy a TV with that picture in the picture feature...sohelpusrhonda
I agree completely. I'm not entirely positive that 400 disc CD players are progress. I have a hard enough time keeping track of my CD's between my car and my living room, and I just know I would lose half of my collection in there.
Call me either naive or clueless...were you being serious and literal when you said *400*-disc CD player???
I used to think I wanted a 6-disc player, though now that I have a 3-disc-er that someone gave me, and I still rarely listen to more than one CD at a time, I'm thinking not. It would have come in handy when I was giving birth (wouldn't have had to worry about changing the music as often), but oh well.
Owen...I hear you...I keep the same 6 CDs in my car because my players in the trunk...who knows where the jewel cases are now. Who remembers to bring new CDs with them when getting in the car..not me.
Andrea..yup it's a Sony Jukebox and do not buy one! It is a big waste of money, poor quality, non-random play (but it's supposed to be random) etc.
What is a good way to handle disks though, Owen and Andrea, is the zippered books with the sleeves for the CDs and the notes. I'd never find a Cd ever without those books.
I love CDS in the notebooks. We had a shelf for them, and it was a pain. Now I flip through books with ease.
I have to confess that I used to LIKE playing with gadgets, experimenting with them to see what they were capable of. I think I stopped liking it when said gadgets' capabilities exceeded my time to mess with them (which was, not surprisingly, about the time I became a mother).
I did take some time a few weeks ago to peruse the manual to my husband's new car. It has a rearview mirror that tints itself at night so you don't have to adjust it to block headlights behind you. And a nifty thingy that tells you how many more miles you can go before you run out of gas. But I didn't have time to look at the whole novel, um, I mean MANUAL.
Of course Summer you get my twisted humor..frankly I thought it was funny myself..
Paintergirl, CDs in the notebooks are the way to go...
Andrea...I will send you my car manual to interpret for me...so far I can do lights, lock, unlock, start, shut off and that's it.
I wonder how this stuff ever came about? I thought that capitalism was driven by supply and demand, but who has a demand for a 400-cd player?
"Oh gosh darn it! I want to listen to Ace of Bace and ABBA and the Beatles and Antony Santos and Ella Fitzgerald and [...five hours later...] and Insane Clown Posse, but my CD player can not hold 400 CDs!"
I'm pretty technological otherwise, but I've had my car for two years and I still keep accidentally setting off the alarm. This is the bad thing about buying a used car, I guess. You might get an idiotic previous owner who thought that somebody would bother to steal this car..
Again, another hilarious post. Yet so true too.
My solution to everything is to pull the plug.
PC hang - pull the plug.
TV has bad reception - pull the plug.
DVD player won't play - pull the plug
Fridge is no longer cold - pull the plug
My reasoning is the gadgets need time to recharge, you know, like a little holiday. Maybe after 2-3 hours of not being plugged in, they’ll magically come back to life and work properly again.
If not, there’s always the husband.
HI Along..thanks for stopping by! You are so right about pulling the plug - it works every time (so far) on my computer.
It even worked when my phone stopped working a while ago -- I just unplugged it for a few days and let it rest. When I plugged it back in it was functional and has stayed that way since.
