What is Harriet Miers: Trojan Horse or Red Herring?

or

Whose Uterus is it Anyway?

Some people think that Harriet Miers might be a Trojan horse. That on the outside, she appears to be a down-home Texan, Bush loyalist, and a not-too-bad-of-a-lawyer candidate for the Supreme Court.

Others believe that she will, once appointed, drop the folksy demeanor, extend her claws and shred Roe vs Wade among other rulings detested by the bullying Bush, anti-choice supporters. That she will come equipped with a rabid, right-wing agenda that she’ll adhere to like glue.

A sticky situation if that should happen.

Still others, including one opinion I admire greatly, my husband’s, wonder if she is the red herring. She is so unsuitable for the court, that it will be easy to argue her away on numerous levels; experience, politics, and the fact she was Bush’s personal lawyer, make her selection look like a gift from the White House rather than a thought out decision for the good of the country.

What if the latter opinion is true?

What if she was appointed for the sole purpose to be Borked? What if this is just a Rovian ruse created to find a way for an even more conservative, agenda-driven crony to get the nomination? (One endorsed by the likes of the Dominionists and the religious nuts who want to see the USA turned into a Christian nation.)

Really, how many candidates can be vehemently opposed by the Democrats before the administration pleads to the masses and says: They didn’t want Miers so we withdrew the nomination, but now they don’t like Miss X or Mr. Y and we can’t keep putting up candidates until all the liberty-loving, Liberals are happy!

Something doesn’t smell right about this nomination.

Either way she isn’t just a simple pick – Bush has too many ties to the religious right for him to risk putting a moderate on the court.

In fact, Business Week wrote:

“Supporters point out that she (Miers) is a devout fundamentalist Protestant and volunteers for a Christian ministry.

The group Texans for Life revealed on Oct. 3 that Miers gave $150 to the organization -- then known as Texans United for Life -- in 1989.

At its annual dinner, featuring a keynote address by anti-abortion leader Henry Hyde, Miers was listed in the program as a bronze sponsor, the group said.”

The fate of a women’s uterus will be sealed by the next Supreme Court judge. And it isn’t looking good right now for people who believe internal organs shouldn’t be legislated or controlled by government.

Those with no uteruses or non-working uteruses will be taking over yours. So take your uterus to lunch today or send it flowers, do something.

I think it is a very interesting choice. The fact that she may get Borked is something to seriously consider. SInce they do not need a replacement immediatley gives some flexability to the situation.

By the way you made me laugh.

Yeah, I don't know what I think about this one. Interestingly, I read an article on the NY Times webpage (I think it was this weekend) that said that Roe v. Wade being over-turned might not be as bad as everyone thinks. Ha! It went on to describe a drug that has worked to abort and also, that medicine is so much more sophisticated that it won't be back-alley abortionists performing with coat hangers. It said that wealthy women will fly to CA for an abortion (YEAH home state!!) and that women without the means would use this drug (can't remember what it is).

I don't like it one bit though. I think this woman is wrong for the job ~ anyone that is a close confidante of Bush is wrong in my book but then, I'm not the majority unfortunately.

William you bring up a valid point about immediacy.

Glad I made you laugh...I'm already thinking of slogans for women's rights like:

Adopt a Uterus
Have you Hugged your Uterus Today?
It's Ten PM - do you know where your uterus is?

Acumama...Wealthy women have always had access to safe abortions..it's the poor and middle class who will suffer. Bushies have thrown road blocks in front of numerous pharmacological methods of birth control and pregnancy avoidance.

The FDA will not rule on Plan B (high dose of hormones that will keep a pregnancy from occurring) as it has to pander to the extreme right. Of course, if you can't keep a pregnancy from happening it leaves only abortion as a remedy for people who want a choice. So they will end up being responsible for more abortions in the long run.

Even Ann Stone of the Virginia-based Republicans for Choice, group says:

"If the pro-lifers are really pro-life, they should be pro–Plan B," Stone says. "But they are hypocrites for setting up a situation that will result in more abortion, not less."

You would LOVE this site: realityshirts.com

If your ever in a t-shirt mood, here is the place for you. I actually bought 2. Its quite a liberal site.

I'm torn about Roe v. Wade. I just dont have any good comment to put on that issue, except to acum's comment. Rich women can fly to CA...WTF? How many 'rich' women are there that can do this that make this choice for themselves? My guess is not many. Whoever wrote that article, SUCK IT.
Bush's personal atty for Sup Ct? OMG, shoot me now.

Let's hope that the Court gets in as MANY CASES AS POSSIBLE before the next appointee shows up. There's basically a rule that the Court will never overtly overrule itself... it will just distinguish between cases creating a sort of in between zone. With very very rare exception. So if the decision is made now before the next one gets in, thy're STUCK. Come on, SC - get your butts moving and get these cases decided NOW!

Thanks for the t-shirt site Lawbrat.

I didn't know that Echrai - very interesting...I'm with you, rule now or forever be stuck with fanatics running the court, I fear.

I agree.....abortion shouldn't be about rich women getting access because they are always able to get the care they need.

Actually, I was surprised to see that article on the website because it was rationalizing and there is NO rationalization about overturning Roe v. Wade.

I also want someone to photoshop a picture of Miers in a red herring suit and post it for me. :)

Mary, I don't usually comment on politics because, well, because I am really stupid about the subject but I'm going to try and venture out on a limb here and give you my perspective.
I saw the speech the prez gave this morning. I watch SNL alot and that's all I can think about when I see him. He is comical. But did you see the bags under Harriets' eyes??? Wow! At least you know he didn't pick her for her looks.

Acumama, the more difficult it is to get birth control counselling, or preventative meds like "Plan B" the more unwanted pregnancies begin and there is something worse than abortion, it's children being raised by a mother who doesn't want that child and a woman being forced to do something with her own body she doesn't want to do. IMO

Echrai, our own LaurenBove is queen of photoshop, but I think she's been busy lately or ...caught up in something to keep her from blogging as much as before...Lauren come back!

Dashababy, Miers has those bags under her eyes filled with something, maybe love notes to Georgie?

My joke of the day for you Mary-

When President Bush was asked about Roe VS. Wade, he exclaimed "Well I don't care how they get out of Louisiana."

Good one Paintergirl! I'll pass that one along.

Everyone, I have been rereading my comments here and I think I have this superior tone which I don't like..sorry...just not up to snuff and not hearing how my words sound...

Sometimes I read my words and I want to say "Aw shuddup Mary, willya?"

I'm not sure what I think about the appointment either but worry about the fact that she's such great friends with GW. That really can't be a good sign. Here in Oregon they are rehearding the Death With Dignity Act in the Supreme court even though we've voted for it twice. So, now I'm worried about that law changing as well as the abortion laws. It's like our bodies belong to the Federal government now. Think of the whole Terry Shiavo thing. When will it end? When will we finally get to say, I decide what happens with my body and nobody else? Geez, now I sound uptight but you get the idea, I hope.

Michelle, it is sooooooo nice to know that there are other people who also feel our right to privacy and to our own bodies is being taken away...Nice to know from the coast to yours, that people won't just sit back and allow this to happen...I hope. Welcome!
