A Letter to Non-United States Citizens

I am very sorry that our president has vetoed the stem cell research bill. He is leaving American scientists with only 22 embryonic stem cell strains that are weak and contaminated with animal cells. It’s like trying to build a three bedroom house out of toothpicks and spit.

He is allowing 400,000 embryos to be discarded, dumped, thrown out, tossed in the trash – rather than have these stem cells be used to help humankind. These embryos were donated for the specific reason of helping science cure diseases and will not ever be used now for anything. What a waste.

He is over burdening the rest of the world by stymieing stem cell research in our country– now it’s all up to you and your forward thinking countries to do the lion’s share of the work.

The Religious Right is controlling American scientific breakthroughs. The Religious Right owns our president lock, stock and barrel.

I apologize that we can’t do more than wait to see what your research discovers.

I hope you’ll share your breakthroughs with our backward, third world country -- we have so many men, women and children who could benefit from this research.

It’s not our fault that our president has made a covenant with the Religious Right – a minority believe it or not.

Most Americans are for stem cell research. Many have loved ones with diabetes or AIDs or Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s or other diseases that can benefit from this research.

Right now, at Johns Hopkins University, 11 rats that were paralyzed, are now walking around happily because of embryonic stem cell research.

Their damaged spinal cords regrew the cells it takes to move their muscles giving hope to people who have nerve diseases and paralysis.

It looks like in America, only the rats are thriving.

Sorry.

well at least now those rats have tha bility to flee from the sinking ship...

it really is sad, especially when those cells were donated. They weren't stolen, ripped, taken in secrecy. They were donated. But as is evidenced by other legislations, obviously us womenfolk aren't intelligent enough to make those kinds of important decisions about our bodies and/or parts of our bodies...

i'm really starting to like this women ruling the world idea...

actually i thought and i guess i need to reread that they are no longer going to be federally funded. but the stem cell research could continue?

maybe i am wrong i will look into this more.

Ilanna...funny Comment! -- well at least now those rats have the ability to flee from the sinking ship...

Jackie..you aren't wrong.

You are right about that!

Good point…it doesn’t actually prevent it legally but it does prevent it logistically b/c federal funding is necessary to go forward with any research.

Although there is independent research going on..it is privately funded and on a very very small scale.

When your party has the majority of seats in congress and you're vetoing bills, does that make you an activist president or just a radical extremist?

Sylow you're baaaaaaack!!!!!

Well actually, he is the messiah! I thought you knew that god talks to him directly. Going to your place now.

You'll find nothing there, but thanks for the vote of confidence. Maybe when my employees stop making it their destiny to find work for ME to do, I'll start finding time for blogging.

Glad you're still here...

Sylow...You're the boss right? Then tell them you need one hour of perfect quiet, no calls, no emails, no visitors for blogging...I'm sure they'd understand, if not fire them!

Wow MB.......VERY powerfully written post.

It is such a shame and a waste, and so many people could be helped. Sad situation.

Hope you are having a great day. It is pouring BUCKETS here!

Love,

I get sick to my stomach when I hear these things. How can a man be SO short-sighted? It's embarrassing how fast our country has sunken into the toilet. We're like a pure-bred pup, all the inbreeding has fucked it up so there's not much left. Oh maybe pretty to look at but all gray fuzz and lint-like inside.

Brilliantly, powerfully written, darlin' ...

Does anyone wonder if things might be a little different if, say, young Jenna Bush were inspecting IDs at a checkpoint in Baghdad or if young Barbara Bush had one of the maladies that stem cell research is aimed at?

I do.

Hi Linda! (mother of Bradley!) -- There's no rain yet but threats of bad weather coming up the coast of New England and I hope it isn't so...

AMK - it's hard to admit that the US is no longer a leader in the globe..not in any category except alienating other countries...we're real good at that.

Nilbo - thanks...your compliments carry a lot of weight with me. I do wonder what Bush'd think if just one of his actions were to negatively affect his own immediate family.

Or his he so bound to his base, the Religious Right, that they are his only master? They are who only matter...

He was, a few years back, far more moderate in his views than he is today. Now he's just about ready to jump up on the cross.

mary - a few years ago he still had to worry about reelection and appealing more to the masses. now that he's on his way to being Lame Duck L'orange he can now do what he really wants to some extent, and he's not a compassionate conservative, he's a fundamentalist freak without any intelligence.

S.O. I think I'll put aside some cash too...it will probably do more good than giving it to United Way.

El G -- Did you see Bush give his unwanted and sexist "back rub" to the German Chancellor? What a dope.

Ilanna...you have a way with words...love Lame Duck L'orange...good one!

Man, I love living in Canada... Sorry... but I just cannot help it!

I do not think that stem cell research will be stunted. I think that the U.S. will see important research / scientists leave the country for another that will support these activities (and others, as well).

In the end, it will be the U.S people that will not be the ones who benefit from advancements in science... Well, at least those that are not of the plastic surgery perspective.

The result will be a cost prohibitive treatment for most people in your country (as if most treatment is not already out of the scope of most average folks - but that is another issue).

You should be proud to live in Canada JDJ -- much more forward thinking country than the US - universal health care, gay marriage, stem cell research. O Canada, you got it going on!!!!!

I just cant wait till he is out of office. This research is vital and we need to take advantage of it, it could help so many people.

Third world country-Melvin and I were just talking about this very fact. China is going to pass all of us. And we are very very sad.

Nice job MB. Did I mention we may move to Quebec?

Blogger mary bishop said...

Marko, the lack of funding will put the USA way behind and then we'll have to beg, borrow, steal and/or pay through the nose to get the treatments/drugs that come from non USA research. Maddening!!!!

OMG! Rated PG!! You might be moving? I love Quebec..it's so charming. Wow, I'd go in a flash. How exciting...I can see you sitting outside at a bistro, sketching in a black beret with a lazy old dog by your side...Brush up on your French!

We can't take it anymore. Love NYC but it doesn't love us. We need a better quality of life for us and the little man esp.

A bistro or cafe is what I need about now. I love the pictures in your head of me. Just add a very active little blond boy and a clingy black lab. That's me!

And the french, started watching french children's videos.

Thanks E! I figured I might as well admit to the fact the USA is no longer leading the world in scientific research...

PG - I am so envious of you! I think you are brave to move but I somehow feel you will be instantly at home...

Great post. I can't believe we have to wait until this jack ass is out office before we can this passed. I just hope the next president doesn't care more about a religous group than about the majority of citizens of this country as well as the citizens of the world at large.

Michelle...I'm counting the days too - now let's hope we can elect someone with intelligence, wisdom and class next time.
