Evil Thoughts on Guestroom Sheets
OR
A Sheety Situation
I hate changing sheets.
I hate all the yanking and pulling and untucking and gathering of used sheets.
I don’t like to do my own sheets, but worse are the guestroom sheets. Other people’s dead skin cells are scattered across, on and under these sheets. Then there’s the blanket – does that have to be removed and washed too?
Then the quilt which is big and heavy – do I have to wash that damn thing just because one person spent 6 hours in the bed? (Last visitor)
Now we can move on to the down comforter. Do I have to unbutton the comforter cover and wash that? What about the down comforter itself, do I have to wash that?
I can’t wash that I’d have to send that to a dry cleaners and it would cost me a week’s salary.
Then there’s the shams and throw pillows, the pillow covers and the mattress cover – when does it end?
I have frequent guests who spend the night and I’m having guests on Saturday who’ll be staying one or two nights. I wish they were also the last people who slept in the guestroom because if they were, I’d smooth the covers and I’d be done with it. Let their new, dead, skin cells commingle with their old, dead, skin cells.
But no, I had a single person sleep a short time in that bed a few weeks ago. I am looking at the bed which I can see from my office and it looks pristine, crisp and made to perfection…only it has those dead skin cells from the last guest and god knows where they are located…might have wormed their way into the blanket or the decorative shams…
So, I will do the right thing, I will strip the bed down to its bones and wash everything I can wash and air the down comforter outside in the bright sunshine we’ve acquired ever since Squirl blew blue skies my way.
But this is an awful lot of work, and I’m so tempted to try to forget the sheets were used once before and just leave the bed the way it is…almost perfect.
Aw sheet…might as well start the process now of ripping the bed apart.
My guests had better bring me a bottle of wine is all I have to say, or even better, offer to remake the bed with clean sheets before they leave.

Maybe you could require a 2 night minimum like the big hotels do on the weekend.
I have the same feelings about washing the guest bedding. I would say, air out the comforter and blanket and just wash the sheets.
This is one of the reasons I don't sleep well in hotels, I know they do not wash the bedspreads so I try not to come in direct contact with it. There is a hotel that I like to stay at and they put a sheet on top of the blanket as well so its encased in 2 sheets. Makes me feel better.
Try not to think about the dead skin. I watched 20/20 the other night about germs. I'll be freaked out for a few weeks.
Dashababy - you are hilarious this morning! A 2 night minimum stay is sooooooooo funny, but you've given me the best advice, I am going to make the bed up with two top sheets surrounding the blanket - I love that idea.
I'm the same way about hotel bedspreads - they instantly give me the icky feeling...yuck, hairs standing on end as I even think of it!
Oh, don't be such wussies.
I have (no doubt, we all do) dead skin cells all over me, but you'd still be a fool not to give me a big hug, and maybe even a kiss when we ever meet. Ohh, germs! Germs!
You brush by people accidently in stores or theatres or any other place people gather. Germs! Germs!
Do you REALLY think Palmolive dish soap does anything but give the germs on your dishes a healthy shampoo? Germs, germs! And then you dry those dishes with a towel that's (come on, be honest) not exactly sterile. Gaaahhhh! Germs!
Live in a bubble or live in the real world. I mean, I'm not saying we lick the bedspreads in our seedy hotel rooms, but I've fallen asleep on airplanes a LOT of times, and never once have I had the faint odour of Fabreze wafting into my nostrils as I drifted off.
I wash the bedding when my guests leave - I live in a tourist destination, in a big farm house that was a bed and breakfast before we bought it, so you just know all summer we have a steady stream of guests. And we're all the same in that we don't want to carefully fold down the top sheet of our temporary bed and see a black curly hair waiting to pounce on us.
But ... assuming none of your guests is in the latter stages of leprosy and leaving body parts in the bed, a simple wash and spin cycle should do the trick.
Aha Nilbo - you use the generic "bedding" --"I wash the bedding when my guests leave " but that still leaves the question: what is bedding? Is it all that I mention down to mattress pads etc. or is it just the sheets?
Yes, I'm a wuss..not about germs - I sort of like germs, but I do not like "dead skin cells" though I'm fascinated by "dead sea scrolls"!
I don't do the sheet-changing, that's my husband's job. As for the washing thing, yes you must. Probably all the covers/blankets too. Because there's also hair and that is enough to make me barf in the sheets and then where does that leave me??
We don't have too many house guests, except my dad so I'm not washing the comforter!!
Two Words: Sleeping Bags.
Make 'em bring their own.
(Or if they want it fancy, bring theirown bedding!).
Ummm, if you put a dash of bleach in the with dishes, it kills germs. Also, only use the drying towel once. Spray the house several times a day with a germ killing spray. Wipe hard surfaces that are frequently touched with bleach water- faucets, door knobs, light switches, toilet flusher handle....you get the idea.
I love clean bedding. There is nothing like getting into a fresh bed. The washing of any laundry, cant stand it!
IF there's a top sheet - i see no reason to wash the blankets too... just the sheets should be fine. :)
I"m with you - i hate doing laundry in general, let alone sheets. My husband does the laundry more than i do so he always does the sheets. :)
AMK - I did it all from zippered pillow covers to the comforter...now i have to keep the door closed to keep the animals off the bed - nothing they like better than fresh linens!
Doc - I gave up sleeping with dead birds a while back ;-)
JDJ - yes, sleeping bags would be great - some of my guests my object I fear...but then the flip side would be they'd have to find another place to sleep!
Lawbrat - thanks for the tips - I'm with you on sleeping in a clean lovely bed...I could really splurge on bedding if I were wealthy! (Not $5000 sheets though...)
Ilanna - a man who does laundry is certainly worth his weight in gold! You're a lucky gal...
They make sheets that cost $5,000? Holy CRAPOLA! I think spending 30 on sheets is alot.
I second that 'man that does laundry is worth his weight in gold'.
lawbrat - the softest sheets in the world are used cotton sheets...if you can find a set at Goodwill they are worth a lot, providing the cotton was good to begin with and they aren't ready to shred.
Use bleach in the washer!!! I got one set Ralph Lauren a few years back and they were so soft...and cheap $5.
