Tuna Can Update

I heard from a VP at Bumblebee and he said the unopened can I gave them was tested and showed no bacteria or microbes.

I told him we had bought a four-pack and the other two cans were perfect also, so I wasn't surprised that a third can would be perfect.

I thought they would test the actual tuna fish salad or sandwich (that is what they told me to give to the courier) but he said they didn't because they couldn't ensure that it was kept cold or that additives to the tuna --like onion or celery or mayonnaise didn't have some microbes, bacteria etc. on them.

Which brings me to where I was: what on earth was wrong with my bubbly, foamy can of tuna? I wish they'd have tested the tuna salad made from that can. I love tuna salad, but right now have no interest in ever eating it again.

I asked a few other questions like when did they start putting soy product and vegetable broth into the can? He's only been there a short while, so he wasn't exactly sure, but thought it was in the early '90s.

He also said some albacore tuna is just tuna packed in water with some salt. I wanted to know the name of that product as what we'd bought was White Albacore Tuna in Water. If you don't read the small type you don't know about the soy product or vegetable broth.

He said he'd get back to me on that question.

Since writing about my tuna problem, I've had a few visitors come to my blog after searching for "bubbles in tuna" or" foamy tuna" so I guess I'm not the only one.

Apparently the fat from the tuna can turn bubbly in the broth. Not all the time, but in extra fatty tuna I guess.

So that's it folks. Bumblebee was good about keeping me informed but testing the unopened can does nothing for me. It was the tuna in the can that had the bubbles that I wanted to know about.

There was something "fishy" about that tuna, I swear!!

My guess is there was something wrong with the tuna that you made your sandwich with. Did you really expect Bumblebee to tell you that they found germs or bacteria in the can? Then you could sue them so you'll never know if the tuna was spoiled or not but foaming tunafish is a sign of spoilage.

Laura you have a point...I'm just getting a slow burn over the fact they never tested the tuna in question after leading me to believe that was what they were doing.

I also opened a can of tuna, can't remember what brand it was but it had some white bubbles in the can and it smelled funny so I threw it all out. I'm glad your cat is okay after driking the tunajuice it probably vomited so quickly because its body knew it was spoiled. Maybe the mercury in the tuna is also causing problems.

Mrs. K - thanks for stopping by. I'm glad the cat hurled because that was a cue that something wasn't right with the tuna and kept my husband from eating it!!

I also just opened a can of tuna from bumblebee, the brand I always trusted, and found frothy bubbles in 2 out of 4, cans in a four pack bought from Publix on sale. I dumped them in a plastic container and will not be eating them. I plan to take them back to Publix. My daughter just had a baby and is breastfeeding, I cant imagine what may have happened to them if they had eaten any of the tuna in question. I suppose some additives may froth, but bacteria growth also forms bubbles. Bumblebee Premium Solid White Albacore 4 pack.

I had the same thing happen when I opened a can from a 4-pack. Small, frothy bubbles. Bubbles come from gas production, which comes from contamination (bacteria). Considering the chance, albeit low, that this was botulism, I threw it out and will probably not be eating any of the remaining cans. So much for that $5!

I found this blog after googling, "foamy water in tuna." I had this issue with a can of "Chicken of the Sea." I drained the water into the sink, with the water running, and the foam got worse when agitated. I thought it was soap! The fish didn't smell terribly off. However it did smell more like cat food than tuna. I threw it away to be safe.

My can was dented as well. So something must have made it unstable.

I bought 3cans of " wild caught Tuna" and it smelled extremely strong once opened. So, i decided to strain and rinse under water- i couldn't believe what my 10yr old and I were witnessing.
Although I was holding this strainer full of three cans of tuna, it foamed up under water like I was using dish detergent. It was foamy for about 3.5 mins. I went ahead and made it since we had celery, onions, and red pepper cut up. But, after mixing and refrigerating it i opened to smell to container. The smell was stronger than I had expected. So to the trash it goes! I just know something is wrong! Very schetchy

I too have opened solid white albacore tuna and same thing foamy soap looking liquid came out it was not a dented can or any kind of damage was not expired and to me didn't smell worse than the next opened in bubbly can .. I found this after searching foamy tuna.. still no idea what it really was ? I threw it out as well . Now I'm very curious wtf makes it do that .. I'm not sure I'll ever eat tuna again.. 4/10/2022
